Advice from your Advisor
Get to know your instructors – visit each of them in their offices at least once a term to ask questions about material you find difficult or to pursue ideas in more depth.
Meet with an academic adviser each year.
Create an advising folder to organize your advising-related materials (e.g. degree audits, schedule plans, notes from advising meetings) and keep it updated.
Read your email regularly. This is how the Health Science advisors will communicate with you about curriculum changes, scholarships, announcements, and department events.
Check the blog regularly. This is where the majority of job and internships opportunities will be posted.

By going here first, your advising appointments will be more tailored to your individuals needs and the advising time will be better spent talking about your individual situation.
Advising is a process in which advisor and advisee enter a dynamic relationship respectful of the student's concerns. Life Science Advising Mission Statement:
In a caring environment and through the use of sound advising principles, advisors educate the transitioning student to implement critical-thinking skills with regard to their personal, educational, and character-building experiences.
Health Science Advising Mission Statement:
As the academic advisors in the Department of Health Science, it is our goal to assist students in setting and achieving educational goals by listening, advising, and outlining a course of action toward graduation for students within the 4 emphases of our major.
To schedule an appointment, please call 422-3386. The student secretaries will set an appointment based on your availability and the advisors’ openings. Appointments are 15 minutes long. If you feel you need additional time, please email the advisor so accommodations can be made. If you cannot make the appointment, please call these above number to cancel or reschedule so another student may take this time slot.
Department Advising Policies:
- Substitutions: Students are allowed up to 2 substitutions in the health electives section only. Substitutions are determined on a case by case basis.
- Transfer equivalency: Student may present transfer information from other universities by appointment or via email. It is the responsibility of the student to provide enough information about the course (course description, syllabus, etc.) for the advisor to make an accurate decision for credit.
- Internships: Students must complete the prerequisite courses before completing the internship registration process to receive credit for their internship, NO EXCEPTIONS. University policy states retroactive internship credit CAN NOT be given for internship work done previous to registration and approval.
What the students CAN expect:
- Aid in Major course sequencing and suggest scheduling time table
- Knowledge of curriculum and changes to curriculum
- Understand and maintain confidentiality
- Submit substitutions, waivers, and class transfers
- Be empathetic to student’s needs
- Be professional in all communications
- Help students formulate academic goals and develop their personal potential
- Partner with students in developing academic plans for majors
- Assist students in selecting appropriate classes
- Encourage and guide students to define and develop realistic educational goals
- Listen carefully to questions and concerns
- Respond to student requests in a timely manner, generally within 1-2 business days
What the students CAN NOT expect:
- The advisor to make any decisions for you; it is your education and your career
- The advisors to make exceptions or tailor the program/curriculum to the student’s personal desires
What we CAN expect from students
- Make informed decisions about their education
- Prepare a list of questions prior to each advising visit
- Take notes during the advising meeting and keep records of advising sessions
- Schedule an appointment with and/or contact advisors regularly
- Be courteous (schedule appts and cancel or reschedule when necessary)
- Research/clarify personal and career goals
- Use critical thinking in decision making processes
- Research internship options prior to meeting with advisor
- Become knowledgeable about university programs, policies, and procedures
- Accept responsibility for academic decisions and performance
- Arrive prepared for the advising session
- Be an active participant in the advising process
